Welcome back to another installment in our new series – I’m A Mom With Tattoos. In case you have missed the last couple, don’t forget to check them out here.
So I guess things go back to normal now. And that’s also OK I guess.
Today we get to meet Liezel who I have enjoyed following on Twitter for a while now. Not only do we share a love for the name Knox, but I just love her loony heart. So go on, you have my permission to ignore pressing emails, put down that ringing phone, throw that laptop out the window. All you need to do right now is get ready with your cup of the good stuff, which for me has reverted back to good old Milo – I’m foregoing diet for comfort right now. Don’t judge me 😉
Your name and blog deets: Liezel Kriel from Elle Kay: Living with Boys
Your age: 31 (eek)
Your Occupation: Jack of all trades master of none. I am currently doing a 5 month stint as a PA. I also do a bit of work in the wedding industry on the side (décor and flowers) I’ve recently started a little creative business with my mom making baby mobiles, it’s still very early days but we have big plans.
A Mom’s favourite thing to do is talk about their children – tell us about your family: I am wife to a gorgeous, kind hearted husband. We met in 2006 and a month later we were discussing the names of our someday children. In 2010 we became parents to our fur baby Knox. A goofy loveable Golden Retriever. Then in August of last year during a ridiculously cold week our tiny human was born. Ben is now 9 months old and the fact that he is 3 months away from a year blows my mind. I still feel like the scared, nervous first time mom to the teeny tiny newborn. But that newborn is long gone. I now have a proper little person, who crawls and chats and cuddles and laughs so hard that you can’t help but laugh with him. He is such a little adventurer and so very inquisitive. I definitely won the baby lotto.
If you work, tell us a bit more about your working environment – are you regularly in contact with new “clients/public”. My previous job was at a small company that made GPS Maps and Travel Guides. I was a Research Assistant and spent most of my time sourcing info for the website and Travel Books or making phone calls to check facts. I hardly ever had to deal with clients/public except for over the phone. My current job as PA is at a very large financial company and although it is quite a corporate environment they are very relaxed and easy going. As before, my contact with clients is mostly over the phone and with emails.
• Tell us a bit about your tattoo’s, what they are, why you have them, where they are located
I have a small ‘loony tunes’ heart on my right wrist (I call it my loony tunes heart cause it’s wonky looking) and then a small, medium and large star on my right ankle/foot area. I’ve always wanted tattoos. While at school my mom would get very angry when I came home from school full of permanent marker drawings on my hands and arms. I told myself I’d get a tattoo as soon as I finished school but then didn’t have the guts to do it. Then I said I’d do it when I graduate University, but chickened out again. After a bad break up with a guy I truly adored I made an appointment, drove to the Tattoo place and pulled out the old crumpled picture of what I wanted from my wallet. 2 years later I bumped into said ex’s best friend, we chatted for hours and soon after we started dating. It was a difficult relationship full of ups and downs and he eventually broke my heart. I once again found myself at the tattoo place with my drawing in hand. Most girls colour or cut their hair after a break up. I get tattoo’s apparently. The next guy I dated is now my husband so no new tattoos.
How old were you when you got your first tattoo? I was 23 when I got the 3 stars on my foot.
Which tattoo is your favourite and why? I love both but I think the stars on my foot are my favourite, simply because it was my first tattoo. I’m a girl that usually plays by the rules and does what’s expected of me, I felt like such a little rebel after I got the tattoo. It made me feel free.
Do you plan on getting more? I said I’d get my next tattoo when I have a baby. I was thinking maybe his birth date or initials. But now that I have my baby boy I’m actually not sure if I want another tattoo. Not because I regret having tattoos, I love my tattoos, but I just don’t feel the need to add anymore. But I haven’t fully made up my mind yet, it’s a maybe.
How do your family and friends feel about your tattoo(s)? My mom made it quite clear that it’s not her most favourite thing about me, but she has accepted it. My brother calls it my ‘tramp stamp’. My dad has never ever said anything about it. I think he prefers to pretend they don’t exist. Friends were shocked at first because we come from such a conservative background, but they do like them.
What is the general reaction that “the Public” have towards your tattoo’s? Have you run into any negativity or adversity because of them? Because my tattoos are quite small and in areas where they can easily go unnoticed I’ve never really had any issues. I’ve had mostly positive reactions. I often get the question “Are they real” or “do you have more”
Any advice for those interested in getting tattooed? I use to draw what I wanted where I was thinking of getting it done. I would walk around with it for a few days and see if I would be able to grow old with this one or tire of it. Start small, you can always add later.
