DIY Sofa Table

So this Saturday I was given some time alone to get stuff done. I was meant to paint the bathroom ceiling, put a switch on the extractor fan, put up a shower screen in the flat, and the list goes on and on. All urgent and therefore extremely boring. I felt like making something out of scratch. It had been a while since I built something, so I decided on a sofa table. The main reason being, that same  morning I tried to open the curtain in the lounge, but the couch was pushed right up against the wall… Again. If you know me well, then you know I have some OCD tendencies. This is one of the things that drives me totally crazy. The idea was to do this first, then start on the boring urgent things after that.

As soon as the girls and Knox left I rummaged through the shed and house and found 2 x 32x2400mm pine battens and a few balau planks. I then whipped up a quick 3D in sketchup to make sure I had enough wood and then started getting my tools together.

I didn’t want to waste too much wood on this thing. It was going to be behind the couch, where no one could see it, and I wanted to use the other wood I had for other projects I’ve been thinking up.

What I used:

  • 2 x 32x32x2400mm pine battens
  • 3 x 90x1370mm Balau decking planks
  • Mitre Saw
  • Cordless drill
  • 8 x L brackets (those ugly little 45° plastic ones)
  • Screws
  • Sandpaper
  • Protective goggles

I managed to get 3 legs and the leg spacers out of 1 battern. The other gave me a leg and beam. Screwed them all together to make this:

I then place the planks on top, cut them to suit the length I needed, and screwed them on with the L brackets.

Now, this is not the steadiest design. If I cared a little more I would have found some more pieces of wood and separated the legs a little more and added a cross bracing… But I didn’t. The couch and wall holds it all up just fine.

As it turned out the party Cindy and the kids went to was only about an hour an half, so I didn’t have time to do much else. Yey! But it  just means I put it off for another week. I’m so naughty.

We Got A Little Bit Creative – Finally | 3 Kids, 2 Dogs, 1 Old House 10 February 2014 at 7:31 AM

[…] Fun things to hang in the girls room when we finally get around to organising it properly.  In the meantime it’s sitting on one of my favourite pieces of furniture in the lounge – our Sofa Table that Seth made. […]
