Summer "To-Do" List – The Galileo Open Air Cinema

Summer is here!

How do I know?  Well, we spent last night huddled together under the stars watching Moulin Rouge and we didn’t end up enacting the scenes from Titanic (where they all die from the cold).  Seriously though, you know it’s Summer when you can actually spend the evening outside without getting frostbite.  Although we were admittedly snuggled under a couple of cosy blankets which will still be necessary for a little while.

Last year I heard all about the awesome movies showing around Cape Town at The Galileo Open Air Cinema (Hillcrest Quarry in Durbanville, Kirstenbosch Gardens in Newlands and the V&A Waterfront in the Foreshore) but we never actually made it out there and I basically died of FOMO.

This year all that’s going to change, as going to another show is firmly on my To Do list for this Summer.

I thoroughly enjoyed the experience, watching the movie under the stars, eating pop corn after an “artisan” pizza and washing it down with a craft beer.  I don’t know if any of our other “date night” spots have topped this in a long time.  Plus it was my very first time watching Moulin Rouge (I fell asleep 5 minutes in the first time I tried to watch it).  I really felt like the experience added to my enjoyment of the movie.

My tips for really making the most out of the event:

  • Get the chairs – you need to be able to lie down but still see comfortably.
  • Whether you are renting blankets or not, I would recommend bringing another one.
  • Bring a few cushions – as useful as the chairs are, my bum went numb about 20 minutes in
  • There are lots of food options available – pizzas range from R50 – R90 and I think the rest of the options (burgers, pregos, nachos, gourmet sarmies) are in that line too.  Pop corn was R40 a tub, so if you’re date nighting on a budget – bring your own snacks.
  • Craft beers and wine, as well as regular soft drinks are available for sale, but you are also welcome to pack your own.
  • Although our Summers are amazing, there is still a slight nip in the air, bring extra jackets – you’ll thank me later.
  • During the Jan/Feb months when you could possibly go without a jacket I would bring a good insect repellent (because I freaking hate insects).
