Just when we’d gotten our kids into the habit of sleeping late and having to wake Knox up at 9 (when he still hadn’t emerged from his Hulk cave), we had to pull the curtains apart at the crack of dawn to get ready for school.
I know right? I don’t know how he managed to get that right but he did and we weren’t happy about messing with it.
Oh my gosh, what is this physical torture of waking up early? Why cruel World, why? Seriously. We should never be forced to be anywhere before 9am. Ever. Thanks.
The first morning wasn’t that bad actually. We’ll thank nervous adrenaline for that one. For them and for me. We all managed to up, get dressed and pile into the car to make it on time for school. Just. But still. We had a few wobbles before we left the house where, instead of them telling me that they were nervous or apprehensive and getting a few cuddles, I kept finding them lying on the floor in their room doing anything other than putting on the shoes I’d asked them to.
Not listening to me isn’t the best way to bring out my nurturing side. Quite the opposite actually.
Anyway, we got there with limited screaming and we wandered into the classes, took our pictures and left. It was all rather uneventful. No actual tears from anyone of us, which I’m quite grateful for. Instead I’m storing them up for Kyla starting Grade 1 on Monday. Gosh, my 6 year old in a uniform is a guaranteed way to get my feelings leaking through my eyes again.
Yesterday morning was MUCH harder to get up and get dressed and be there on time but I’m hoping that we’ll perfect it this morning. Although, just as we get that right, Kyla will start on Monday and we have to move everything 45 minutes earlier! Be still my beating heart. I have this little ball of knots sitting in my tummy about it. But honestly it’s because I’m going to have to say goodbye to some more sleep. And no one wants to do that.
Here’s a few pictures from my GRADE R starting her first day and Knox in the 3-4 group, whatever they call that 🙂

Too precious! Sleep is sacred and 45 minutes is a lot!! I will mourn with you in sympathy lol
PS: Please tell me where you got Knox’s shoes? My Matthew would love it!
RIP sleep 😉
We got them at our local Woolies, but I’m sure that they have them at all the major branches or online?
Dude!!! 45 minutes is a huge leap! Good luck!
And yes, on “not listening” bit – I so feel you, on that! Boy, do I feel you on that! Grrrr…. 🙂
I haven’t missed the 45 minutes yet, but let’s talk again this evening 😉
Love all the back to school posts. So why do the grade 1 only start on Monday? And wow – I would lov eto know how to get L to sleep just and hour later than the usual 5:45
Oh man, I’d seriously struggle with such an early start. We’ve taught the girls how to put on the TV and set it to a safe channel so we know they aren’t watching nonsense so we get to lie in a bit more.
I’m not sure why our school decided on a later start but I’m quite thankful for it, conquering them in stages 🙂
They are too cute! 🙂 This early morning this is awful I quite agree but now we are into it again… It just meant an afternoon nap on Monday which was awful because of course after a four hour afternoon nap he only went to bed at 10pm! But I bribed him with ice cream on Tues to stay awake in the car on the way home.
Ours are still not into it! It’s driving me crazy. They are SO exhausted but then refuse to go to sleep early. They get this second wind of fury that keeps them awake till past 8. I could easily go back to sleep and I woke up the same time as them – ugh!
