Our lounge is the heart of our home – everything happens in it.
In Winter we find ourselves huddled around the fire, sharing pizza and laughing at yet another animated movie. We sit on the floor around the coffee table and play card games, or the kids take over and play teacher/teacher. Seth and I settle ourselves into the couches and get into our evening series and chill time as a couple and the kids sometimes play hot lava and throw our cushions all over the floor.
Who am I kidding, they do this even when they’re not playing. I swear it’s the first thing they do when they walk in the house. They head straight for the lounge, throw off the pillows and sigh with the satisfaction of a job well done.
In Summer we sit as still as we can on the couches to try and keep cool while the kids run circles around us, begging and pleading to let them swim. It’s where we sit and catch up after a long day, where Kyla and I snuggle on the couch to practice her reading and where I spend many hours lost in my latest book.
Basically speaking, we spend a great deal of time in our lounge. It’s also one of the first spaces that you see when you come into our house because the floor door basically leads straight into it. So it’s quite important to us that it reflects our taste as a couple/family.
When we moved in, there was not much happening. Unlike our previous house, it didn’t have a big gaping hole in the floor so we were pretty chuffed with it exactly how it was – you know, not hazardous or anything. And slowly but surely we’ve been transforming it into what we wanted.
Most recently we updated the fireplace because it was clad with fake stone and well, fake stone is pretty bad, but painted fake stone just seems so much more acceptable. We did it as a “white wash” because I still wanted some of the stone colour to be slightly visible and not a flat matt finish, so we did a half paint/half water concoction to do it. I’m pretty chuffed with the results.
I thought it would be quite cool to take a look back at how far we’ve come, so let’s travel all the way back to 2012 when we moved in to this past weekend where we updated the fireplace…
Dare I say that this is just the start of my updating buzz. I’m now determined to fix up another area that I spend the other half of my time – my bedroom!
I’d love to know what you think?

I love it! I actually liked the fake stone look but the white looks so much more modern and sleek.
It looks great. Love it!
I love the whole thing! I painted the master bedroom of our last house the same color and it worked wonderfully. I think the paint on the fireplace makes the whole place look so luxe. Great work!
Thank you! The dark and light contrast really do make a difference. We also have the dark colour on the walls in our room and it’s the next fav place in our house. xox
It looks really really nice! When I saw on Instagram that you were going to paint it, my first thought was – but the cladding gives the whole place such a nice look – definitely think the white wash was a better choice than painting it a matt colour. It looks like a place where love lives 🙂
Ah thanks man! It’s so funny that everyone had the same reaction – no one thought it was a good idea to paint it, but now they love it.
Looks great! I’m normally a fan of the natural stone look, but that white, as you say, balances the room so well and the contrast is just so much better! Well done!
Thank you!!
It looks great! I love seeing before and after pics of things people have done in their homes – so inspiring!
[…] the house as we’ve lived here – we’ve painted outside, planted a few things and redone the fire place, but there is still lots to do. The list is literally […]
