It feels so weird to be sitting back behind my computer screen again, catching up on work, drowning in emails, fielding school requests and rolling my eyes at social media.  But at the same time, so completely normal.  Like nothing’s changed.

Except for me – everything has changed.  I’m changed.

It was just one week ago that we landed back in Cape Town after our little Italian getaway, but it feels like forever ago.  I can’t even.  Since we’ve been back to normal, my fingers have been itching to tap away behind the scenes of my beautiful new blog, but at the same time I’m terrified to get started.  I think it has something to do with really acknowledging that it’s over.  Done.  The thing that I was pining for for months has happened.  All we have are the memories, about a million photographs and a relationship that has been seriously boosted by our time alone together.

Never fear though, for those that are interested, I am going to write about it.  Because this is my diary, and what kind of diary would it be if I didn’t record everything in it?!  In fact I’m probably going to write about it so much that you may begin to hate me.  But I’ll try and keep it to one post a week so that I don’t make you want to rip your eyes out or like, throat punch me or something.  Cool?

OK, let’s catch up with everything else shall we?

Currently:

Doing:  All I feel like I’m doing it catching up.  While we were away we didn’t look at our phones to do anything other than Skype the kids, take pictures or share on Instagram.  It was freaking liberating not having any responsibility other than deciding where to eat or what to see next.

Now I came back to over 450 emails in my work inbox and about 200 in my personal inbox.  It actually makes me sick looking at it.  But the good news is that besides the blog getting fresh new look, I was missing here last week because I actually just needed to get myself back in the game.  And I think I’m there now.  Mostly.

Excited About:  I have been around for 3 out of 4 of Kyla’s teeth that popped out – either because of that time we shot it out with a Nerf gun or because Riya knocked it out with her butt.  No matter the reason, I was there.  But with Riya I have missed all three of her teeth that have come out – they’ve happened at school, at granny and recently, just after we left for Italy.  This time though, I was determined to be there, so she said that we could pull it out.  Well, Seth could pull it out, because I’m way to squeamish for those kinds of things.

And viola!

(Head on over to my Insta if you want to watch the actual video of it coming out)

Look what happened today! I missed all 3 of the other teeth falling out but I was there for this one! Hooray! (Swipe for video of it coming out) Thank you @briangfincham for getting it on camera!

Watching: Man oh man, I didn’t miss TV at all while we were away but now that we’re back I’m loving it again.  Having that space to just switch off after another busy day.  We also watched a tonne of movies on the plane, so here’s a little run down…

ORPHAN BLACK:  Still obsessed with this series.  We’re watching the latest season on Netflix and it never disappoints.

UNBREAKABLE KIMMY SCHMIDT:  I started and finished the first two seasons last year when I was down with meningitis, but now there’s a new season out!  Hooray!!  I love that it’s a bit of lighthearted fun and I dig the sense of humour – Tina Fey is my vibe.

LALA LAND:  In the beginning when they got out of their cars to sing on the road I vomited in my mouth a bit.  Ugh I freaking hate musicals.  But I pushed through and by the end I didn’t hate it as much, I even shed a little tear.  Still don’t think it should have won ll the things it did, but yeah.

FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM:  I’m a big HP fan so I was stoked that we could finally watch it (I missed it at the movies because, well, I’m a parent and we didn’t have enough date nights or something).  I loved it but was not as completely into it as I thought I’d be.

KEEPING UP WITH THE JONESES: Oh my goodness.  I haven’t really liked Gal in the other things I’ve seen her in (probs only that last, really long and boring Batman VS Superman) because they didn’t give her enough lines for me to like her.  But this movie changed that.  She’s awesome and I can’t wait to watch Wonder Woman!!

Enjoying:  Seeing all our friends again!  We had a weekend jam packed with most of our favourite people and although it was busy, it was also awesome.  I love it when people make themselves at home in my house and we can just chill because we’re all on the same page.  No need to impress, or worry or whatever.  It’s the best.

Small changes:  I’m trying out a new email thingy so if you want to make sure that it comes straight into your inbox, add my emails “cindyalfino@gmail.com” and “cindy@3kids2dogsand1oldhouse.co.za” to your contacts and so if you have that Google thing like I do, it won’t take it to the Promotions tab if you don’t want it to be there.

Looking forward to connecting a bit more this week, but for now, have a good one folks.

Wow the fact that you didn’t have to look at your phones – only to skype your kids – seems like a dream. It actually happened. You should do more “alone” trips, you and seth. Though I do acknowledge being without your kids is……I don’t even have a word for it, but I mean it’s not nice being without them. Glad they are old enough to stay with good care – grandparents.

I know right?! It seems almost surreal. I’d love to do more alone trips but I think with three kids it always feels like a bit much to as of everyone to look after them while we’re gone. We might have to settle for one a year (if we lucky). Don’t get me wrong, but being without the kids is totally revitalising for our marriage every now and then as I’m sure it is for most folk.

Welcome back Cindy!
Not sure if you’re like me, but if there is something that I’ve been looking forward to for a really long time, once it’s over, I almost feel a bit depressed about it and it takes a while to get me back in the swing of things again.
Your new website is GORGEOUS! I love how clean and fresh it looks.

Totally! That does really summarise how I’m feeling right now. I keep looking at the pictures and my heart swells for how awesome it was and then reality bites when I have to make supper again or whatever. But it will be OK again soon I hope.

Welcome back Miss C. Love how you’ve changed the site. (Have had to change my brightness settings when reading at night ?-it’s awesome and clean-like walking into a camps bay home )
Can’t wait to read about the trip. I’m definitely inspired to do the away thing alone to reconnect. Happy re-intergrating ????

LOL, I love that, like walking into a Camps Bay home hahaha. It’s definitely a goal to work towards as a married couple – being alone together for an extendedish period is just so good.

It’s so sad isn’t it! But it’s at least a little bit of motivation to plan the next trip! 😉

I know how you feel… getting back to normal is so difficult. I feel so depressed when I come back from a beautiful holiday in SA. It takes at least 2 I at least 2 -3weeks to “get it together”
I wonder what it would be like when we return home this year for good & I can have dinner with a house full of family or friends ?.
Memories of your trip are priceless for sure.
