There once was this family of five that decided to buy a 1978 VW Jurgens Campervan. In Kimberley. So they had to drive it all the way back down to Cape Town. Really putting their new purchase to the test. They didn’t take the kids with them on that trip though, because they haven’t completely lost their minds. When they eventually got home, they introduced their kids to the new campervan – it was a win.
Then they decided to completely freak their neighbours out and camp out one night in their front garden.
In case you were wondering, those weirdos are us.
But you already knew we were nuts so it’s OK. You probably expected it to be honest. I mean yes, we could have gone to like, an actual camping place, but why do that when you can do it in your garden for free? Exactly! Also when you drive it, the fumes become overwhelming. So driving somewhere and then trying to sleep in it might have made us all high and/or like, dead or something.
Which meant that the garden was perfect. And yes, our neighbours walking their dogs looked at us a bit funny when they walked past, but it was fun!
Seth made some stir fry on the little gas braai thingy that we have then we ate it inside the camper. It was already quite late when we started (as you can probably tell from the darkness) so as soon as they had eaten, they jumped into bed.
Then the crazy started. They were angry that they all had to sleep in the same space even though hours earlier they were just fine about it. In fact it got so bad that they were shouting, “I hate this. I hate Optimus. This sucks.” But they all fell asleep pretty quickly and actually so did I. Only Seth was up to check that the little remainder of fumes that floated about wouldn’t kill us. The dogs also joined us so that was fun too.
Knox even woke up at 12.30ish, shouted, “This is a really bad idea. I don’t like this.” and then promptly fell right back to sleep. haha.
I slept quite well all things considered. The “bed” that’s in there wasn’t too uncomfortable and the walls actually provide a surprising amount of protection from the cold outside, even though they are super thin.
We all survived the night and spent the morning chilling with some coffee, listening to Knox snore (as he was still sleeping until like 8.30) and it was great. We even had breakfast outside.
No night away is complete without the girls bringing ALL of their dolls and Barbies with them. They were everywhere. Literally inside all of the cupboards. Every time I happened to open a new cupboard, another do;ll would fall out! They are going to get a huge fright when we actually go away in this thing for a longer stretch. Choosing two is going to kill them.
But I know what you’re wondering…
Where did you go to the toilet?
And I’ll leave this video to answer that one…
And some more pictures of our time in the garden…
