Celebrating 30 and 4

wine in cape town - the westin

No, no no.  Before you think I suddenly turned 34 (eeek), I’m finally getting around to telling you how we celebrated turning 30 and turning 4 on the same day.  That’s right, in case you missed it, Knox (my baby boy) and I share a birthday and so we have to celebrate twice as hard.

So what did we do?

Well, we were woken up with some high pitched Birthday song singing, a chocolate and vanilla cupcake with a “3” and “0” candles lit in them and balloons all over the bed.  Then it was present opening time!  Knox and I opened all our gifts and read all our handwritten cards (the girls wrote one to Knox and it was the sweetest thing.  Never mind the one that Seth wrote to me.  I may even have shed a tear).  We followed up all the noise by chowing the cupcakes with a lovely cup of coffee and snuggling my birthday boy while Seth took the girls to the lounge to chill.

I had a moment where I just sat back and realised, this is it.  Today I am THIRTY!  That’s right.  No more messing around.  Time to be an adult.  Or at least try to be.  And I wasn’t even sad.  I think all that pre-birthday emo vibes made it so that I actually had the absolute best day.  In fact, I felt loved up by my family and friends and that really made me feel like a freaking Queen.

Then it was time to CELEBRATE!

Do you have a special place that you go to whenever you want to celebrate something big?

For me that place is the Thirty7 at The Westin in Cape Town.  My business partner and I went there when we celebrated a HUGE milestone in our business at the beginning of the year and it just felt right to go there as a family to celebrate turning 30 too.  Have you been there yet?  You can basically see the whole of Cape Town.  Table Mountain, Lions Head, Signal Hill and the whole of the Waterfront.  It really is amazing.  I don’t think that there is a better view in all of Cape Town.

In fact, I had to steal an image off their website just to show you – my pictures just didn’t do it justice!

When the kids weren’t running up and down and pressing their faces onto every bit of glass in the restaurant (sorry Thirty7), they were kept busy with colouring in at the table.  They have one of my all time favourite wines on their selection – Diemersfontein Pinotage so we ordered a glass and enjoyed the view while we waited for our food.  They have a really cool kids menu with loads of healthy options.  Our kids chose the bolognaise (Riya), the chicken strips and veg (Knox) and Kyla (always adventurous) had a stir fried fish dish.  Seth had the lamb and I had my all time favourite – steak!  It was really lovely and we thoroughly enjoyed our meals.

We stood at the windows and showed the kids were we work, all the cool place that we’d been to that they could now see from the top and the whole of Cape Town.  It still gives me vertigo standing so close to the window but our kids were totally unphased – they must take after Seth.  They loved seeing their town from a whole new perspective.

And, of course, no birthday is complete without cake and Thirty7 went to so much trouble to help us celebrate.  It was really special!  I felt like a celebrity.  In fact, you should totally take your special someone there for a special occasion, you will not regret it.

After that we went to the Waterfront where we finally took the kids to the newly revamped Aquarium.  That whole new section with the glow in the dark jelly fish is cool – but Knox was a bit bummed that there were no sharks that he could run away from.

Then it was time to go home and chill.

Unlike many other year, I honestly could not have had a better birthday if I tried.  Knox felt the same way – I asked him 😉
