Our DIY Harry Potter Party

Harry Potter Party - Hedwig Cake

Want to throw a Harry Potter party here in Cape Town? Let me give you the best DIY and budget tips to help you on your way!

Listen, although it may seem like this Harry Potter party was for my girls, because it was like, their birthday or something, it was also very much for me. I’ve been a huge Harry Potter fan since high school and been dreaming of the day that I could get my kids involved. Luckily, when they heard the books (we listened to them on Audible here) they were just as hooked as I was. We even got Seth involved!

In fact during our year on the road where we were listening to the books on every single long drive, we started planning this Harry Potter party. Which means that the actual party details have been in process in our brain space for over a year. Luckily it all came together nicely. (Would have been once heck of a bummer if it hadn’t right?!)

The party in all it’s magicalness

Here’s the finished product and then at the bottom I’ll give you a quick how to on where to find it and how I made it etc.

Harry Potters Hogwarts Letters emerging from the fireplace like in the first book/movie and Voldemort checking his DMs – casual
Stuck some Harry Potter Wanted Posters in the bathroom
These are our Harry Potter Sorting Hats made from cake pop filling and Fondant icing. We used them for sorting the kids into their houses for the games. Fondant is disgusting though, most of it was wasted.

Harry Potter Drinks
Harry Potter Party Drinks. Pumpkin Juice (orange), Elf Made Wine (berry), Butterbeer (pear), Fire Whiskey (apricot) and Veritaserum (plain water)
Gillywater - Harry Potter
Gillywater for those not brave enough to try the rest – cucumber and mint water

The Great Hall - Harry Potter
The Great Hall which wasn’t so great but like, for the amount of time the kids actually spent here, it was great

Harry Potter DIY – How to Guide…

One the aims of this party was to create very little waste and spend as little as possible. I think we achieved this on both fronts by doing the following:

  1. We made almost all of the decor ourselves from items around our home. Our biggest expense, as it always is for a party, was the food.
  2. A lot of the food waste that wasn’t overly sugary and full of crap ended up in our composting bin.
  3. The chip packets etc that aren’t recyclable went into our eco bricks.
  4. The rest that we had control over went into recycling.
  5. But as you know during a party no one else gives a toot about that, so we ended up with just one bag to put into the bin that was a random mix of everything.

Part of the magic of a Harry Potter party is seeing all the things you’ve read about come to life in front of you. Even better if you’ve been able to make it yourself. Well, for me it is anyway, such a creative release!

I got most of my inspiration on Pinterest (where else). Check out the Harry Potter board for links to all the printables etc.

Hogwarts Acceptance Letters - Harry Potter Party
Hogwarts Acceptance Letters DIY

Hogwarts Acceptance Letters

We had a whole bunch of A5 envelopes lying around the office because we bought them like 8 years ago and then promptly stopped posting things. Because if they were delivered by owls, that would be one thing. Snails however, no thanks.

Step 1 – Fold your envelopes and then stain them with tea

Step 2 – Melt red wax crayon to the back for effect

Step 3 – Address the envelops: Mr H Potter, The Cupboard Under The Stairs, 4 Privet Drive, Little Whinging, Surrey
We used clear gut and tape to hang the letters in front of our fireplace
The really added to the scene (for me anyway)

Harry Potters Golden Snitches DIY

Ever tried to make a golden snitch? Easier than catching one I’d wager. They look far more daunting that they actually were to make, if you have a bit of patience on your side.

Golden Snitches DIY
Step 1 – Cut out about 86435938 wings from white, silver or shiny paper (I found this paper at Typo last season)
Golden Snitches DIY
Step 2 – Fold the leave in half and then stick onto toothpicks

Step 3 – Cut the wings with scissors to create a feathery look

Step 4 – Stick them into your golden balls and there you have it

Platform 9 and 3/4

It is most definitely NOT a Harry Potter party if you don’t have this iconic platform at your party. This was one of the most intense crafts though, it took forever. Plus, maybe I’m just getting old, but my back was sore for 2 days after this!

Platform 9 and 3/4
Step 1 – Buy a cheap plastic table cloth (R15 at China Town). Use acrylic paint (I used fabric paint and it also worked although still a bit sticky). Get a brick shaped sponge and bakkie for your mixed paint. I combined brown and red to get a less “fake” look.
Platform 9 and 3/4
Step 2 – Spend an entire evening sponging paint onto the table cloth while binge watching The Big Bang Theory and Bob’s your uncle.

Snape’s Potion Class Decor

Snapes Potion Class - Harry Potter Party 2
Kyla and I spent an evening filling all the bottles we could find with random crap in the kitchen and craft drawer. From glitter to water paint to poster paint to glitter material and in some cases, a bunch of nothing. We lost 10 points for Gryffindor on that one.

The Magic Wands

Look here, it is pretty much impossible to be a real wizard without a wand. I assumed that everyone would come with something, but in case they didn’t, I didn’t want anyone feeling left out. So we made some super cheap ones with spray-painted sticks. Take that budget.

Magic Wands DIY
Step 1 – Find a bunch of wand shaped stick. Gluegun the handles for extra effect.
Magic Wands DIY
Step 2 – Spray paint with any colours that you have available. These are a combination of red, silver and copper.
Magic Wands DIY
Step 3 – Present them like they aren’t just a bunch of spray painted sticks.

The Sorting Hat Cakepops DIY

I had big plans for these here little cakes. They turned out great but fondant is just not lekker, so most kids didn’t eat them (and I don’t blame them. There were also SO many cake pop insides left behind that we had to chuck them. Bummer. But we live and we learn.

Sorting Hats DIY
I wasn’t going to bake a cake just to smoosh it up and put it in a cake pop, so I bought some swiss rolls and we added a bit of icing with food colouring and smooshed them to a pulp. Turns out that we cut so much off the birthday cake that I didn’t need to buy these at all – ugh!
Sorting Hats DIY
After we made the main colours I pulled off pieces and made smaller balls. We then covered these in the fondant in a sorting hat shape and viola.

Harry Potter’s Hedwig Birthday Cake DIY

It took us all a really long time to decide on what to do for the cake. Should we make Voldemorts face and freak half the kids out?! Should we make a quidditch pitch? The birthday cake is our “thing” so we didn’t want it to be too easy but also, have you watched Nailed it?! Exactly. This looked easy enough to do, so we made a Hedwig cake.

Hedwig Cake Step 1
I cannot deal with a plain vanilla cake. Like what even is the point?! So I cut up chocolate to hide in the icing.
Hedwig Cake Step 2
The cake was 6 small rounds high. Each layer separated with caramel or vanilla icing with diced chocolate.
Hedwig Cake Step 3
While I cut out a million feathers from rice/wafer paper, Seth cut out the shape of the owl
Hedwig Cake Step 4
We stuck on all the feathers, used mango strips for the claws, a big yellow jelly eggs as the beak and Hufflepuff cake pops for the eyes. I think she turned out perfectly – one of our best cakes yet!

And that’s a wrap

And that my friends, brings us to the end of another party. Now we just have one month to chill before it’s Knox’s turn!!

Wow, everything looks so amazing! So much effort, but I’m sure putting it together was a lot of fun too! I’ve never done a proper, like themed, party for my kids yet. We usually go simple – cake and tea, or an outing with the kids and immediate family. But when we decide to do a party I’d also enjoy doing some of the decor myself. The brick door!!! So cool!
And I love that you do the eco bricks with the plastic – we started too after a visit to the Aquarium and trying to keep it consistent.

Thanks so much – a lot of hard work and late nights but I am so chuffed with it. I am afraid if I ever do this as a business I’ll start to hate it haha
