A Day In Hout Bay

Hout Bay

We had a super chilled holiday in the sense that aside from a little trip out to Frog Mountain, we spent the rest of the time in Cape Town.  But whose complaining?  Half of South Africa come down to Cape Town for the holidays to there’s something to it.  Well, except for all the people complaining that everyone is coming down to Cape Town of course.

Still, we were committed to spending time in our city trying out things that we’ve either never done, or haven’t done with the kids.  So one day in the holidays we met up with friends in Hout Bay for a day of fun.  The plan was to hit up Clay Cafe in the morning and the spend the rest of the day at the beach.  But nothing ever goes to our plan.  Clay Cafe was booked until 2pm.  No problem though, we got to Hout Bay super late anyway and ended up at Dunes for lunch.

I love this place.  We’ve been there a few times – mostly because it’s great for kids and the food has never been disappointing.  PLUS it’s right on the beach so the views are super too.

As usual Seth took it upon himself to order something that would make me vom.  Man, I can’t handle being able to see the face of the thing I’m eating, never mind actually eating it’s flipping face!  No thanks!

After our bellies were full and the kids had played, it was time to head to Clay Cafe.  The last time that I was here, it was still at the old venue.  But wow, this new venue is insanely cool.  So much for the kids to do and play with.  And they upped their food and beverage game – you can even order kombucha there!  I was actually sad that we’d already had lunch – the options on the menu looked delish.

The waitress came around to show us how to do everything and then we went to choose what to paint.  There were so many options!  I’ve painted a few things in the past and I’m always worried that I’ll hate it and never use it.  Which has basically happened for almost everything else that I have painted.

The kids always choose the most useless things, so we’ll have Hello Kitty, Darth Vader and a Bunny to find a home for once we pick it up in a couple of weeks.  I’m thinking the garden?

Painting is always fun.  The girls really enjoyed it and I think Knox enjoyed it too, but was glad that he was done when he was.  They just wanted to go out and play.  Seth manned the kids outside while we finished up our pieces.  I did two little espresso cups.  I hope they come out the oven looking as cute as they did in my head.

Next time I’ll definitely do more research on what I want to do before just rocking up and feeling panicked.  Although I’m sure I say that every time that I go haha.

My biggest annoyance is that I couldn’t get the edge perfect.

This is the stuff that they have already put in the oven.  We found some really cute ideas for next time.

As we’d promised the kids that we’d go to the beach – we had to make good.  I also learned that I will no longer promise them anything – it hardly ever works out.  But this time it had to.  Because I promised and the day before I had said something about the beach and when we didn’t go, Kyla cried for like a full 30 minutes.

We popped into the local Spar and then went over the mountain to Llandudno to watch the sunset.  It was flipping cold though.  Yoh.  We sat in the wind and at our rolls with ham, cheese and a healthy dose of sand.  The guys played with the bats and the ball despite the wind.  Seth even swam!  It was great.

One of the highlights of the holidays for sure.

She may hardly ever do or say the things I do or say, but sometimes she gets as intensely cold as I do haha
