Our Lounge Makeover

I love our house.

I don’t know if I’ve mentioned that before?  Probably.  But really.  I feel like although it’s not perfect, every part of it is perfect for us right now.

Since we’ve moved inm quite a few people joke with me that I should change the name of the blog to “1 New House”, but when you look at the nitty gritty of it all, it’s actually the same size as our old house and built in the same era (the 70’s, so technically it still is one old house).

The big shift in why it doesn’t feel so old is that before we moved into this one (a year ago) it had a total makeover.  Walls knocked out, stipple plaster covered, cupboards built in and just generally had a more modern feel to it that our old place did.  Another shift is that in the old house the rooms were huge with a smaller “living” space but in this one the living area is much more suitable to our growing family as this is actually where we spend all of our time.  I get that in the teen years this may change, but for now I quite enjoy that we spend most of our time all up in each others faces.

One of the things we tried in our old place was having a blackboard wall.  Seth and I loved it, but Kyla loved it more.  It’s where she really learned to draw (and if you check out that link that’s also very clearly where I was learning how to blog).  The only problem was that it was in the passage and so the decor part of it totally lost it’s effect.

In this house we have a lovely feature wall that we could use much more effectively.  But obviously, we didn’t because kids are expensive.

For about a year we had the pictures up on our beige wall and it bugged me every time I looked up at it.  Why even have the pictures up if you don’t even notice them?  What a waste of time.  Plus also, how boring is that colour?

Finally after a whole year we got our act together and bought the paint.  I can’t tell you the difference it’s made to our whole space.  I’m not going to sugar coat it – I freaking love it!  Now the only thing I don’t like is that it took us so long to do it.

In case you can’t make it out, the words say, “The best things in life aren’t things” which is exactly what we try and live by here in our home.  Not to say we don’t appreciate the finer things in life, but our family and relationships with them are so much more important than that.

A side note is that we also painted the walls next to the fire place, but that’s not really finished yet, so I didn’t bother taking a “set up” picture.  I kind of like the deconstructed look though.

We also managed to give the back garden a bit of a face lift which I will share when I remember to edit some of the pictures.

I just love that slogan and how appropriate to have it next to pics of your family. Now can you come and do one for me 😉

hi, is it a chalk wall? do you think that would work or is it too expensive? What type of paint did you use?

We didn’t use chalk paint this time around (we did in our old house – but it was very expensive), but we have been using chalk on it and it’s been coping ok. We used the regular indoor paint from Dulux. 🙂
