Our Rainbows and Kites Party

29 July 2015

On the weekend we had a Rainbows and Kites party for the girls.

It took a while to decide on the theme because every girl and her imaginary friend wants a Frozen party but honestly, ugh.  I mean, don’t get me wrong – I get it.  I love Frozen – sometimes I put it on because I want to watch it myself, but I just can’t fake enthusiasm about going to another Frozen party, much less be bothered to throw our own.  Thankfully the girls were easily swayed and they came up with the new theme.

Only a couple of days before the party did Kyla make the connection that the Rainbows are for Riya and the Kites are for Kyla – you know, because they start with the same letter.  Something that had escaped me, but really made it all the more fitting as a theme.

The girls were so excited they were waiting at the window for everyone to come:

I tried to keep the party low key this year.  I don’t know about you but this year has been tough on us financially – having to dish out money for things that we weren’t planning to dish it out on.  So this is what we did…

A Rainbow and Kite party on a budget

We made a rainbow and kite themed cake (for more on the story on why the cake was inedible, read here).  For obvious reasons, making it is cheaper than buying it, but also it’s become our tradition to stress ourselves out the night before the party, trying to make our vision come to life.  And then of course seeing their reaction the next morning – priceless.

Thankfully we had the amazing Welsford Bistro and Catering to make the cupcakes and cake pops or else we wouldn’t have had any cake to eat on the day – worth every penny if you ask me.  Plus they were beautiful and yummy too!

I wasn’t going to do a craft but at the last minute Kyla asked that we do something.  So I thought that instead of a jumping castle it will at least keep them busy.  After trawling Pinterest to glean a few ideas, I bought different colour board and some cheap cotton balls from our local discount store (the Crazy Store) to make a rainbow craft.  I just winged it because I couldn’t be bothered to actually look at any of the instructions – thankfully they turned out ok.

And we couldn’t forget about the kites so I went to one of those really cheap china town kind of stores in Town and found kites for about R15 each.  So I got one per family as their “party pack” (I know not everyone agrees, but this is my view on party packs).  Initially we used them as decor and then we went to the park close to our house to fly them.

Do you know how many times we’ve been to that park to fly kites?  Probably around 3 times.  Do you know how many times we got the kites to fly?  ZERO.

But the weather for the party was PERFECT for kite flying so we everyone had a good go of getting their kites to fly.

Also, because it’s not a party until I’ve cut out something finicky and stupid, I got some paint chips from our local hardware store and cut them up to make mini kites which I hung up around the house.

Then we blew out the candles of the cake and cut it up to find out that the ants had made their home in there (perfect place to live if you ask me).  But all in all it was a really great day.  More pictures of the rest of the party another day.

Everything turned out beautifully. I’m so glad the kites at least flew, despite the fact that they were so cheap! 😉 xx

Yes thank goodness! I was worried that either the kites would just break or that we’d have no wind – but everything was fine 🙂

Wow, that’s really impressive! I’m being nagged for a party at the moment and the best I could come up with was Spur (it’s my FIRST kids’ party ever). Thanks for the ideas, I feel a little less horrified at the idea now.

I think if our kids could choose they would much rather go to the Spur because it’s the best thing ever for them – so no worries!

Totally with you on the Frozen birthday party thing.. I think I’ve seen about 20 of my friends hunting for Elsa dresses to send their little ones off to parties in… the rainbow theme is so pretty and you did a great job. Now I’m off to find out why the cake was inedible 😉

Yeah I think the first 4 Frozen parties that we went to were awesome, but there’s only so many blue sweets you can swallow 😉

This is really cool. I like some things that are unique and doesn’t follow the trends.
