The Tree Is Up – And Our NEW Christmas Tradition

6 December 2016

christmas tradition

I don’t know about you guys, but the Christmas tradition of putting up our tree every year is a bit of a mission.

The thing is, I always have this picture in my head.  The picture is always the same actually.  All of us are gathered around the lounge, singing Christmas carols off key while we assemble and decorate the tree.  It’s filled with laughter and joy – just like Christmas should be.

Except it’s NEVER like that.

The reality is that the kids lose interest halfway, the mince pies burn in the oven and by the time the tree is up I’m exhausted.  Instead of wanting to spend time with them, I’m counting the minutes until they are in bed.

BUT NOT THIS YEAR

There is nothing I enjoy more than making a little bit of a fuss about something.  You know, what I mean?  It just makes the whole occasion that much more special.  And so I realised that this is what I have been doing wrong over the last few years.  I wasn’t making a big enough deal about it.  In my head of course, but no one knows what goes on in there so it was unfair to expect my family to try understand that.  I need to clearly show them what I wanted to happen.  So…

This year I turned it up a notch.

A brand new Christmas Tradition

I made us a Christmas Traditions surprise box.  I filled it with all the things that I pictured when I thought of us having the best time.  Christmas jammies, special decorations, treats, mince pies, hot chocolate (but milkshakes because it’s hot here) and even some Christmas earrings.

Christmas traditions box

Guys, this is so much harder to do in Cape Town, South Africa than you’d think.  Why we don’t have Christmas jammies in all of the big retail stores (which in translation means cheaper than getting them made because they aren’t going to get a hell of a lot of use out of them are they?  I found these at Cotton On – literally the only store that had anything like this and the earrings are from Lovilee).  Anyway.

The result?

Just look at these faces!!  Even Seth was surprised – he had no idea what I was doing.  Mission accomplished!

Once we’d changed, we got down to the serious business of decorating the tree.  Then, when the exhausting work was done, we had hot mince pies and watched Home Alone together under the twinkling lights from the tree.

And it didn’t go perfectly.  Far from it.

While we did manage to sing Christmas carols, we completely over decorated the bottom half of the tree with a million different colours.  While we laughed a lot, we also spilled our milkshakes down the front of our new white jammies.  While we had the special family watching movie moments, the movie we hired through Google Play kept skipping and so the words were never in sync with the actors.

But you know, it didn’t even matter.

I finally had my perfect Christmas tradition.

What a cool idea 🙂 Don’t you love watching what items your kids take first when faced with a box of different things?

And your TREE!!! IT IS SO HUGE!! Such tree envy!

Our tree looks like the decoration box vomited on it but Kiara did it, then Jack and Emma added some stuff so I love it. (David twitches when he walks past though)

Yes! It’s so interesting watching them react to these kinds of things, they all have a different reaction!

So with David! I have to restrain myself from changing it all 😉

Very cool! I’m usually the only one excited about putting up our tree too! Maybe if everyone got a little bit of an incentive (aka a Christmas tree putting up box thing like yours) then they’d be a bit more Jingle Bells and a lot less “Can we rather just watch you do it.” (Even though I secretly fix their decorating when they’re in bed, because it needs to be even and my OCD can’t deal)

Well done! Love this tradition. I totally get ‘what’s in my head and others’ don’t relate to me’ but I am glad you guys had fun!

I think we all have this problem as women. We envision things and then it never turns out the way we picture it.

The box seems like such fun. Our tree isn’t up yet…suppose we should get to it :0

Sweet man – this is so special! I’m yet to put up our tree. Our “tradition” is to put the tree up 12days before Christmas and take it down 12days after, however, we’re on our way to Durban on the 10th and with my eldest’s birthday on the 5th and my baby on the 11th, I didn’t think it fair to bring the tree out any earlier so that we can just focus on the birthdays, their special day. However, with us only possibly returning to Jo’burg a few days before Christmas now and the boys coming back with their grandies before then, I think that the tree is going to have to go up before we go!!!

Flip – you have a crazy busy month! It must be really difficult with birthdays in the same month

And added to that, I organised all the Christmas decor at work including personalised Christmas mugs as gifts for the 48people in our team! I am FRIED today and we haven’t even had Riley’s birthday yet. But I’m sure that after my last day on Friday, I’ll pep up 🙂

Great idea!! Although my husband would balk if I had to ask him to get involved in something like this. He would rather take the boys outside and let me put up the tree myself than help me. Our tree is up (done by myself, again lol) and Ethan is in awe! I love how his eyes light up at the flashing lights, how whenever he walks past, he just stands there and looks at which ball he can grab off the tree and rearrange lol.

I so NEED to get us Christmas jammies too!

I say do it! Even if hubby doesn’t want to, then you do it with your boys. They will love you for it!

What a great idea! Luckily our tree and decorations have come out of storage (and are at a known location, unlike many of our other boxes!) but with some much unpacking to do the tree hasn’t been a high priority. I think a festive fun box is just the thing to get us to do it – and damnit, if Wayne doesn’t look good in a nice set of earrings 🙂

HAHAHAHA! I would love to see that picture of you and Wayne in matching earrings!!

What a lovely new tradition! Our tree still isn’t up, felt kind of guilty about it last night, for about half a split second…

Christmas Has Arrived In Our Old House - 3 Kids, 2 Dogs and 1 Old House 6 December 2017 at 12:06 PM

[…] Last year I surprised my family with a little Christmas Box.  Man, I love it.  Putting together random little things that I know they will get excited about is totes my vibe.  So this year I obviously did the same but skipped the PJ’s (because I couldn’t find any nice ones…  Christmas PJ’s can be all kinds of things, but I want them to at least have red and green on them.  Not bright pink or blue which is all that I could find).  And I added a cool van that is obvs not the same as Optimus but is too damn cute to pass up.  I can just picture it in our campervan when we celebrate Christmas in it next year!
