When I think back to my childhood, I’m brought back to a moment sitting on the cold floor of the weird lobby area outside of my bedroom. My friend Lee-Anne and I were chilling on the floor, making the Barbie prance around the house while she got ready to go on her first date. Something I had no idea about being like 10, but still. But who cares about that, playing make believe games is all about doing the things you’ve only imagined.
Come to think of it, I played Barbies with anyone that came over to my house, whether they wanted to or not. The girl down the road had a Ken and a whole stash of awesome clothes, so we frequently got together to see what new adventures our Barbies would have. And even when I had no other girls to play with, I’d force my younger brother to play with me with his G.I Joes. Being the older sister has its benefits.
I’ve been dying for my girls to be old enough to really appreciate the value of a beautiful Barbie and I think we’re getting there. Our girls were gifted a beautiful Holiday Barbie from Mattel and I swooned when I opened the boxes. It was like I was 10 years old again. They are so beautiful that I’m actually thinking about just keeping them aside for myself as collectors items. Maybe it’s selfish, but like, they may just be too beautiful to play with.
Hiding in my bedroom I was debating whether or not I should gift them to my girls for Christmas when Riya walked in. Although the Barbies themselves were safely packed away, I accidentally left an image open of them on my laptop. Even though I thought I was super sneaky, Riya saw the picture of them and sighed with awe. She then declared, “Now I want one of those for my birthday!”. So maybe I’ll have to relent and give it to her for Christmas.

Ahh I used to love Barbie when I was small, i used to have a huge kit bag with clothes and all the accessories.
I remember my gran and grandpa made my sister and I a Barbie house each and kitted the whole thing out for us… Alas my daughter (9) has never been into Barbies like I was, we have bought her a few but she just hasn’t caught the bug.
The Barbies are gorgeous, but I was never a girly girl. I climbed trees. However, I have a 5 yo who is a totaly girly girl and LOVES her Barbie. She will be ecstatic!

Ahh goodness I always wanted to be a Barbie collector! But I do feel a bit bad keeping a gorgeous doll that was meant to be played with packed away! So I would keep her for a while, in the hopes that the next baby is a girl and one day she can get a pretty (by that stage vintage) Barbie! If no girls arrive then my niece Rebecca would get it on her tenth birthday 🙂

Reading this post took me back to last year December when my then 4 year old was gifted with a Barbie from my Mom and how I told her she is NOT allowed to play with this Barbie in the bath or wash its hair or even comb the hair! My husband told me I was mad to treat the doll with such strict rules and why give a child a doll they may only play nice with! He could not understand the value behind an original Barbie! Today I have 2 little girls (5 years and 19 months) who both love Barbie and would love this Amazing prize! I of course would be super excited to help them open the package and might just be secretly re-wrapping the package after I opened it alone and admire the handywork ;)! An amazing gift indeed!
