Packing Our Bags And Hitting The Road In Our Campervan

30 January 2018

Optimus - Alfreenos

A little while back we journeyed all the way from Cape Town up to Kimberley.  Why would we travel such a great distance?  Well, it was because we set our hearts on the most beautiful camper we had ever seen.  A 1978 VW Jurgens Campervan still in most of it’s original condition (the original leather seats!  I die).

Many of you, who may have seen the updates on Instagram or Facebook, might have wondered what the hell we were doing.  Have we completely lost our minds buying a van from the 70’s?  What was our plan?  What are we going to do with it?

Well, for those of you that follow along through our newsletter, you’ll know that this has been brewing for a long time.  If you are one of our friends and family, you would have heard us talking about it for a while too.  And the thought probably crossed your mind that you may be friends with complete nut jobs.  Thank you for sticking with us despite the fact that you are indeed friends with us weirdos.

But all that aside, we’re finally ready to openly share our big news on the internet machine.  And it gives me goosies just typing this out…

We are going to be packing up our lives, stuffing it into our campervan and travelling South Africa for a year!

Say what now?

Yeah I know.  It’s a lot to take in.

What you are thinking now (and probably more) was going around my head about 6 or 8 months ago when Seth originally mentioned his thoughts to me.  In fact my first reaction was a flat out “Hell NO!”.  I honestly thought I was imminently going to have to book Seth in to see someone to fix his head.

But slowly and then surprisingly quickly, I really warmed up to the idea.  Which, if you know me, is a pretty big deal.  It took quite a lot of chatting to both Seth, my friends and fam, and lots of research. And now we’re going to be packing up our lives possessions and heading out to see the World on 1 July.

Pretty freaking crazy huh?

So there is a lot of reasons that we’re doing this and my blog post would literally go on forever, so let me share this video we made instead.  It’s a bit long, yes.  BUT it should answer all the burning questions, like the obvious one – WHY?!  Also – How?!  Where?!  In what?!  What about the kids?!  What about the dogs?!  It’s all there.

Make yourself a cuppa and settle in…

Obviously we are going to be sharing a lot of the journey as it happens, so make sure to keep an eye on some of our social platforms:

  • The Alfreenos Instagram:  This will hopefully be one of those pretty accounts.  You know the ones I’m talking about right?  Where everything looks cohesive and awesome.  It will include the bulk of our adventures but from the pretty angle.
  • The ModernDadDIY Instagram: This is where Seth will be chronicling all of his progress while we revamp the camper.  We literally have to strip it and start again. SO exciting to see how this all turns out!
  • The Cindy Alfino Instagram: This is not going to change in any way – this will continue to be where we share snaps of real life as it happens.  I don’t think I’ll ever manage to make it all look cohesive and pretty and I’m totally OK with that!
  • The Seth Alfino Instagram:  Again, another really personal account of our adventures, but from Seth’s perspective.  We’ll try and upgrade his phone before we leave so the camera quality is better haha.
  • The YouTube Channel:  We will be creating a lot more video content – DIY posts of old Optimus getting his transformation, the places we visit, the things we get up to and maybe even vlog style of every day life.
  • Then lastly our Facebook Page:  A round up of all of the above – so if you aren’t really down with Instagram or YouTube you should still be able to stay up to date with what’s going on, if you want to of course.
If you have any questions, I would LOVE to answer them, so feel free to pop them in the comments – I promise to answer every single one.  Always directly in the comment, but maybe in a full blog post if necessary too.

So freaking BRAVE!!!! And super inspirational. I mean, not that I would ditch my bed for a camper van anytime soon. But, you know what I mean. Feeling inspired to do something too. Maybe like, next year. Okay when the babies are big, when the babies are big, I promise. All the best you guys!!!!!!

Absolutely! I actually cannot even imagine trying to do something like this with kids under like, 4! It would be my actual worst nightmare

So excited for you! I’d love to do this with our family one day. When I was in Std 3 we travelled Europe for 6 months in a camper – 4 kids with the youngest only 18 months. I think my folks must have been smoking something! It was the BEST adventure though.

321Blog 30 January 2018 at 12:05 PM

The fact that you still remember it and that you are keen to do it with your own family makes me even more excited to do this!! But doing this across Europe is probably my absolute dream. Gosh, imagine!

This is amazing!!! How are you going to be doing the whole WIFI thing?

Reply
321Blog 30 January 2018 at 12:04 PM

That is a flipping great question! At the moment I am with Cell C and Seth is with MTN. We’ll also get a Vodacom dongle to add to the data mix. Hopefully one of those always has signal, and if we do go completely off grid for a time, we would make sure that we could do day trips out to work where there is signal. In theory this is haha

Wow guys – what an adventure! I am secretly envious but a bit of a pip squeak to do it myself. You will have to find someone to care for your dogs as you won’t be allowed into any game park at all with dogs and many campsites also do not allow dogs. We have traveled quite extensively throughout SA and Namibia – You wouldn’t be able to get into any of the reserves at all which would be very sad as these are the best places to visit 😉
A quick search on taking dogs into Namibia: You must first take them to the State vet and have them checked out. All their vaccinations must be up to date etc. You need from them a Veterinary Import Permit and a Veterinary Health Certificate. They must have had the rabies vacc and be microchipped. You can’t leave getting the papers till the last minute or do them too early either. They need to be done 10 days before arrival. You do your passport bit at immigration and then you also have to go to the other customs block and show them the paperwork for the pets. Assume it is the same for Zambia (Victoria Falls) and Mozambique.
Good luck with all the planning – I am very interested in seeing your progress fitting out the campervan 😉

Yeah taking the dogs with just freaks me out a bit, but we have asked all our friends and family if they would be willing to take them and no one has offered to help. Which sucks. I don’t know what else to do!

How does one plan such a thing? Are you renting out your house for the year? I’m glad Seth suggested this, this is a brilliant idea. All the best with the planning.

I have no idea how to plan it to be honest! We are renting our house out for the year, so the logistics of coming back for a bit is going to be challenging.

Looking forward to following the progress with Optimus as well as your discoveries. I follow a young South African family who packed up everything, downsized and have just started a journey around the world in a yacht. Their young kids are also homeschooling. I asked about the tiny wardrobe space and she said it’s a blessing – they have about 7 outfits and now instead of a wardrobe full of clothes she hardly wears, she focuses on good quality clothes. She loves each piece of clothing and wears a different outfit each day of the week and because they are in a new place each week no one notices the lack of variety. When something wears out she gets rid of it and replaces it. No space on their boat for clothes she never wears.

Woah that sounds like the dream! Who is that family? I’d love to give them a follow! But I totally get that, I think the hardest part would be that every picture we take will just look like it was taken on the same day hahaha

Hi,

You guys are definitely not nuts. I have been toying with the idea for almost a year. And, hopefully, I have finally made up my mind to take a 6 month sabbatical and tour South Africa in a camper van with just the wife and I. There are many reasons for wanting to this but my primary reason is to break away from the daily grind and create some really memorable moments with just my wife. Having brought up four kids and having been married for 27 years, I just feel like I really need to this for my wife and I to become friends again and not just parents that end up with an empty nest with the realisation that without our kids we may end up becoming strangers.

Any advise you guys can offer on anything from how to look for a good second hand camper, how to plan your itinerary, cost, etc., will be really appreciated.

Yours truly,
Zaid Patel

Hey Zaid – you are making the right move – I say GO for it! You won’t regret it! We found our camper on Gumtree with a massive stroke of luck, but there are a lot of groups on Facebook that you can join that may help as well. Will definitely put together itinerary and costs etc as soon as we have been on the road a bit.
